Understanding ShieldScore

ShieldScore™ is ShieldHub’s standardized criminal background risk score designed to help businesses, consumers, and property managers make safer, more informed decisions when granting vendors or contractors access to people, property, or sensitive environments.

Unlike a traditional background check report that may contain detailed personal information, ShieldScore converts criminal background screening results into a simplified composite risk score that communicates compliance and risk level while helping keep sensitive report details private.

What Makes ShieldScore Different?

Traditional background checks are typically static documents that are only accurate on the day they are issued. ShieldScore is designed to go further by combining:

  • Criminal background screening
  • Standardized risk scoring
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Unlimited sharing through ShieldID™

This allows contractors and vendors to purchase one portable screening solution that can be shared with multiple clients throughout the year.

How ShieldScore Works

The Consumer Reporting Agency (CRA) processes the criminal background check and applies ShieldHub’s proprietary scoring algorithms to generate a composite ShieldScore.

The score considers factors such as:

  • Severity of criminal convictions
  • Number of convictions
  • Overall composite criminal risk
  • ShieldScore is then assigned to one of five scoring categories ranging from IC01+ to IC04.

ShieldScore Risk Levels

LevelRiskDescription
IC01+Lowest Risk

Indicates no reportable criminal convictions were identified during the background screening process.

IC01

Low Risk

Generally represents minor or isolated criminal history findings that may still meet many client compliance standards.

IC02

Moderate Risk

Represents more significant or repeated criminal findings that may require additional review depending on client policy requirements.
IC03

Elevated Risk

Represents serious or repeated criminal activity that may exceed many client acceptance standards.
IC04

Highest Risk Concern

Represents the most severe criminal risk classifications and generally indicates substantial compliance concerns.

*ShieldHub provides risk scoring standardization for the basis of the ShieldScoreTM and is not responsible for the engagement acceptance criteria set by the Client’s Policies. ShieldScoreTM considers both the severity and count of criminal convictions in the scope of the background check when determining a composite score. The visual matrix representation identifies thresholds for severity of criminal convictions, total of convictions allowable per level of scoring, is for informational purposes, and is not inclusive of every category or type of crime.
